Do you have a drywall patch that you need to blend into an otherwise finished wall? We’ve got a few tips on what to do.
Finishing a smooth wall is pretty easy. Usually it just takes a little sanding to smooth out your patch job. Then when you paint, the nap of the roller will blend it right in with your existing wall. But contractors also use a couple of different finishes that can make covering your tracks a bit trickier. One is called the knock down, the other is called Orange Peel. Let's take a look at both.
Let's start with the Knockdown.
Most hardware stores carry a spray-on product called Knockdown Texture that makes this fix a lot easier. Just stand back about 24 inches, and spray the surface. Let the new material set for about a minute, then take a six-inch blade, and lightly drag it over the new surface. If you don't get the texture right the first time, no problem! Just scrape it off and do it again. The can holds enough product for you to do this 2 or 3 times, to arrive at the finish you want.
Now let's take a look at Orange Peel.
Once again there's an off-the shelf product, called Orange Peel spray texture that you can get at the hardware store to help you out with this.
Stand back about 24 to 30 inches and spray on the finish. Spray heavier or lighter depending on the finish that you have in your home. After about 30 to 45 minutes the texture will be dry, and ready for a prime coat to start your painting.
Obviously, getting a good texture match is an important part of hiding any wall repair. So, if you don't feel comfortable completing this project on your own, find a service professional to take care of it for you. HomeAdvisor has a lot of great, pre-screened options that you can check out.
Good luck!
